If finances are a concern or implants are not a practical solution, removable replacements, or dentures, are sometimes the best treatment for replacing missing teeth. Occasionally, dentures serve as a temporary measure while waiting for dental implant placements to heal; at other times, they are the permanent treatment of choice. At DP5th, we offer a wide range of full and partial dentures in NYC that can be customized to your mouth. Partial dentures are used to replace one or several missing teeth, while full dentures will replace a complete upper or lower arch of missing teeth.
About Dentures in NYC
Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. We offer two types of dentures that are available: complete and partial dentures.
Complete dentures are used when all teeth are missing. With this, complete dentures can be either “conventional” or “immediate.” Conventional dentures are made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has begun to heal, about 8 to 12 weeks after extraction. On the other hand, immediate dentures are created in advance and can be placed as soon as the teeth have been removed. In this method, the patient does not have to be without teeth during the healing process. That being said, gums and bones tend to shrink over time following tooth removal during the healing period. Because of this, immediate dentures can present a disadvantage to conventional dentures due to the extra adjustments needed to fit properly. In fact, immediate dentures are often considered a temporary solution before conventional dentures are created for a patient.
Meanwhile, partial dentures are used when some natural teeth are intact in the upper or lower jaw. A “removable” partial denture or bridge often includes replacement teeth that are attached to a pink or gum-colored base. It is sometimes connected by a metal framework that then holds the denture in place within the mouth. Another type of partial denture is a “fixed” bridge, which replaces one or more teeth by applying crowns on the teeth located on either side of the gap. Artificial teeth are then attached to the crowns and cemented in place. Partial dentures offer a solution to fill the gaps caused by missing teeth as well as prevents other teeth from shifting.
How Dentures in NYC are Made
The development process for dentures in NYC often takes a few weeks and multiple appointments to complete. Once your dentist determines the type of denture that is best suited for you, here are the general steps of how they are made:
First, a series of impressions are made of your jaw and measurements are taken of how your jaws work together and the space between them.
Next “try in” prostheses are created and positioned in the exact shape based on the impressions. The try in is assessed for color, shape, and fit.
Finally, the final denture is cast and adjustments are made as necessary.
What to Expect
New dentures may feel a bit strange or loose for a few weeks following the procedure. This is because the muscles of the tongue and cheeks need time to learn how to keep the dentures in place. Patients also usually need to get comfortable inserting and removing them. Minor soreness and increase in saliva are common experiences as well. That being said, these symptoms will subside as the mouth adjusts to the new dentures.
